Hi Urufish.
I read all your posts with outmost interest. We live in the US and want to move to Uruguay. Both my wife and I are 41 yrs of age, not retired, no monthly pension or other income. We will have suficient funds to come over with in order to buy a house, start a small business, etc.
My main question is: Can we get the permanent residency processed and approved at an Uruguay Consulate and obtain it pryor to coming to Uruguay?
Also does your mover Canur Courier Service have people in the US? Or can your Oscar come to the US and do / supervise the packing?
Is it better if I buy my own container(s)? Can I keep / use / sell them in Uruguay?
If I want to bring a 2007 model vehicle will it be dutty free or do you have any ideea on how much the dutty tax will be?
Please reply. Thanks.

If it's a full container. If the manifest is exactly what customs wants to see. If there's nothing on the manifest of particular interest to them. If there's nothing in the back 5 feet that's of particular interest to them. If it's being unloaded at your apartment/house here in Montevideo the customs people normally spend 30 minutes at the beginning.. just looking on and then leave.
If they find something unusual, they may stay for the entire unloading, looking into most or all of your boxes.

We brought all of our electrical appliances with us... See a full description of how that's done at
http://urufish.wordpress.com/2007/07/08/youre-no-pal-of-mine/

I lived in the biggest city in Canada all my life, 6mil people in the metro area. I didn't want to do that again. Montevideo is smaller... abou 1mil people.. Right size for us. If we decide we want the glitz again for a weekend or even a day, we take the Buquebus overt to BA. We have friends who go there almost every weekend.

Doesn't get near as cold as it gets in Toronto. No snow. No ice. The coldest months are Jul/August. If you have central heating, it's just a dreary experience... I've been here for 3 winters. Lived through 2 of them. 2006 was mild by Uruguay standards and it was a non event. 2007 was severe by Uruguay standards. Most northerners complained about it... Many expats didn't have central heating. We do. So it didn't bother us much. My advice to a northerner coming to live here is simple. Do what you did up north, in reverse. Break up the winter here by going north (as opposed to going south), in July or August.

I break up the year this way.... you have 6 months of excellent weather... Come mid September, things start to get nice. You get nice days here and there. By October, it's nice most of the time. November is nicer and getting hotter. December is hot, as is January and February... come March, things are nice. April nice most of the time.. May, you'll get cool evenings... and some cool days.. It's winter by June. To sum it up, 4 months are cold, with some nice and even warm days sprinkled through... a real treat... But it's not the cold you get in the northern US or Canada. Net: 8 months are good. 6 of those are great.

Locals drive scooters and motorbikes all year long. That should give you another perspective on winters here.

Shall we bring electrical appliances to Uruguay?

Is Montevideo a better city and Uruguay a better country to live in than Buenos Aires?

How cold does it get in Montevideo?

I'll give them a call later today..
BTW, had lunch with Migel, Canur brother #2, last week across the street in Costa de Azul...
When he moved our house, I loaned him my measuring tape. He put in his toolbox by accident. He found it after I left and brought it all the way down here and dropped it off at my house.
Really nice guy.
